Wobec ataku medialnego na pracownika IPN dr. Tomasza Domańskiego

Barbara Niedzielko
Data publikacji 27.04.2020

Jana Grabowskiego. O jakości pracy naukowej dr. Domańskiego najlepiej świadczy opublikowany przez niego materiał Korekta obrazu? Refleksje źródłoznawcze wokół książki „Dalej jest noc. Losy Żydów w wybranych powiatach okupowanej Polski”, z którym czytelnicy mogą zapoznać w Internecie pod adresem: https://ipn.gov.pl/pl/aktualnosci/65746,Korekta-obrazu-Refleksje-zrodloznawcze-wokol-ksiazki-Dalej-jest-noc-Losy-Zydow-w.html i zestawić treść z recenzowaną publikacją.

The IPN’s statement in response to a media attack on Tomasz Domański Ph.D., a scholar from the Institute of National Remembrance

In its activities, the Institute of National Remembrance has always applied the principle of freedom of scientific research, emphasizing the requirements of historical reliability. This approach is based on respect for sources and their use in accordance with the standards of professional research.

Universally accepted procedures for a scientific review of published studies ensure the freedom and appropriate level of scientific research.
Publishing scientific reviews and review articles in the form of source-based-polemic, with respect for the testimonies of the described era, is one of the foundations of the search for the truth and promoting high research standards.

The IPN’s scholars have always been aware that in the free world, pointing out mistakes, weak points of the adopted methodology, oversights, or finally conscious manipulations on the part of some authors, aspiring to be researchers of history, may trigger repeated outbreaks of aggression and journalistic commentaries which are far from the principles governing scientific disputes.

Once again, Tomasz Domański Ph.D. was attacked as a result of his source analysis of the way the testimonies of the era were interpreted, also in the works by Prof. J. Grabowski. The quality of Domański’s research is best evidenced by his work made accessible online at: https://ipn.gov.pl/pl/aktualnosci/65746,Korekta-obrazu-Refleksje-zrodloznawcze-wokol-ksiazki-Dalej-jest-noc-Losy-Zydow-w.html.

An analysis of the texts in question enables the readers to compare the scientific standards of both publications.

The very fact that Tomasz Domański Ph.D. undertook the effort of a scientific analysis of the source publication, co-edited and co-authored by Prof. J. Grabowski, has repeatedly resulted in the latter’s aggression. Needless to say, such an approach is hardly in accordance with the principles of reliability and respect for the truth, which should characterize any scientific discussion.

Once again, Jan Grabowski formulated this type of attack on 25 April  2020, in a publication on jewish.pl portal. This text best illustrates the methods and intellectual level of such journalistic manifestations of aggression. It is available at: https://jewish.pl/pl/2020/04/25/nacjonalistyczna-ofensywa-na-temat-historii-zaglady/

The Institute of National Remembrance is of the opinion that genuine effort on the part of the researcher, based on respect towards the source material, will easily withstand this type of attack.
