The IPN Deputy President Prof. Karol Polejowski and Consul General Magdalena Pszczółkowska of the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Toronto honored the victims of Soviet crimes with flowers laid at the local Katyn Memorial and at a plaque to Polish deportees to Siberia. Similarly, they tributed all victims of the 2010 Smolensk crash.
Prof. Polejowski and Consul Pszczółkowska also visited the barracks of the Royal Regiment of Canada, where Romuald Nałęcz-Tymiński, captain of ORP Ślązak that rescued Canadians at Dieppe, has a memorial plaque, and graves of the volunteers to Gen. Haller’s army at the Niagara-on-the-Lake War Memorial.
Earlier on Tuesday, the IPN Deputy President was interviewed by Radio 7 Toronto.
Asked about the significance of his visit, installing a plaque to ORP Ślązak crew in Canadian Dieppe, or opening the "Trails of Hope. The Odyssey of Freedom" exhibition in the John Paul II the Polish Cultural Center in Mississauga the day before, he said,
"To me, as the IPN Deputy President but also as a historian, commemorating places connected to Poland’s history in the 20th century and people connected to these places is an element of what we call the nation’s memory. On memory we build our identity, we use it to educate next generations, and recognize it as an absolutely crucial link in the continuity of the Polish nation."
