Presentation of the exhibition “The Phenomenon of Solidarity. Pictures from the History of Poland, 1980–1981” – University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA), 3–24 July 2012

From 3 to 24 July 2012 the exhibition “The Phenomenon of Solidarity” is on display in the main lobby of Memorial Library of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The exhibition was created by the Public Education Office of the Institute of National Remembrance in Poland in August of 2010, for the 30th anniversary of establishing of “Solidarity” Trade Union.

The presentation of the exhibition is possible thanks to cooperation between IPN, the Center for Russia, East Europe, and Central Asia (CREECA) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the Polish Heritage Club – Madison.

On 16 July 2012 at 5:00 p.m. in room 126 at Memorial Library of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Neal Pease (Professor of History, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee) will give a lecture “Polish Solidarity, a Retrospective: The Workers’ Revolution that Toppled the ‘Workers’ State’”. The lecture will be followed by a small reception.

The exhibition was prepared to commemorate 30th anniversary of the birth of the Solidarity Movement. It presents the important events from the strikes of August 1980 to the imposition of Martial Law in December 1981. The exhibit also depicts the path which led to the Solidarity Trade Union’s establishment, its relations with the communist regime and the attitude of society towards the Trade Union within the context of the most important political, social and economic events of Poland.
