Visit of the IPN delegation in the United States

On 20-23 March 2012 the delegation of the Institute of National Remembrance visited the United States. The delegation included Dr. Łukasz Kamiński, President of IPN, Dr. Krzysztof Persak, Director of the Office of the President and Dr. Rafał Leśkiewicz, Director of the Office for the Preservation and Dissemination of Archival Records.

In Washington, the representatives of IPN met with His Excellency Mr Robert Kupiecki, the Ambassador of the Polish Republic in USA. The meeting concerned IPN’s ongoing projects and potential extension of the Institute's activities in the United States. The delegation also met with Mrs Sara Bloomfield, the director of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum to discuss cooperation between the two institutions. Currently the exchange of copies of archival materials is taking place on the basis of the agreement between IPN and USHMM. Both sides are also willing to cooperate on educational and publishing areas. These issues were also raised at the next meeting with Dr. Radu Ioanid, Dr. Juergen Matthaeus and Dr. Michael Grungerger, heads of the programs at the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at USHMM.

The IPN delegation also visited the National Security Archive. The meeting with Malcolm Byrne, Deputy Director of the Archive focused on the possibility of establishing permanent cooperation between the IPN and the NSA and conducting joint research projects.

The visit at the Hoover Institute in Stanford was associated with the preparation for establishing formal cooperation between the two institutions. During the meeting with Richard Sousa, the Director of the Library and Archives, the agreement and principles of future cooperation were discussed. The IPN delegation also got acquainted with the archival funds on Polish history held at the Hoover Institute. The copies of these documents could be the subject of exchange within the archival cooperation.
