Presentation of the exhibition “Phenomenon of Solidarity. Pictures from the History of Poland, 1980–1981” - Toronto, Canada, 3-29 February 2012

From 3 – 29 February 2012 at the Munk School of Global Affairs (North Wing) at Toronto University, an exhibition “Phenomenon of Solidarity. Pictures from the History of Poland, 1980–1981” was on display. The exhibition was created by the Public Education Office of the Institute of National Remembrance in Poland in August of 2010, for the 30th anniversary of establishing of “Solidarity” Trade Union.

The presentation of the exhibition is possible thanks to cooperation between IPN, the General Consulate of the Republic of Poland and the Centre for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies at the Munk School of Global Affairs, as well as Konstanty Reynert Chair of Polish Studies at Toronto University.

A ceremonial opening of the exhibition took place on 3 February 2012 in the Munk School of Global Affairs (North Wing, class 108), 1 Devonshire Place, Toronto. It was accompanied by a lecture by Tomasz Kozłowski from the Public Education Office of the Institute of National Remembrance dedicated to the history of the “Solidarity” Trade Union.

The exhibition was prepared to commemorate 30th anniversary of the birth of the Solidarity Movement. It presents the important events from the strikes of August 1980 to the imposition of Martial Law in December 1981. The exhibit also depicts the path which led to the Solidarity Trade Union’s establishment, its relations with the communist regime and the attitude of society towards the Trade Union within the context of the most important political, social and economic events of Poland.
