On 24 March 1944, in the German-occupied town of Markowa, the family of Józef and Wiktoria Ulma were executed for helping Jews. A group of German gendarmes and Polish Blue Policemen came to the Ulmas’ house and shot Wiktoria, Józef, their six children (all between the ages of 2- and 8-years-old), and the eight hidden Jews. Wiktoria was about to deliver her seventh child.

In December 2022, Pope Francis approved the decree on the martyrdom of the entire Ulma family. The beatification will take place on 10 September 2023.
