A statement by the President of the IPN in relation to the decision of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation on the liquidation of the International Memorial

It was with disbelief and sadness that I received today's decision of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation on the liquidation of the International Memorial. With this decision, the Russian state confirms that it is not interested in dialogue based on historical truth.
Since the end of the 1980s, the Memorial has brought together organizations dealing with human rights and the commemoration of the victims of Soviet totalitarianism. The establishment and functioning of the Memorial was tangible proof of the democratization of public life in the USSR, and later in the Russian Federation.
It was largely thanks to the efforts of the Memorial that knowledge about the Soviet system of repression and its victims reached the citizens of the Russian Federation and the whole world. By initiating the introduction of a law on the victims of political repression, passed in 1991, the activists of the Memorial restored the honor and dignity of millions of Russians and people of other nationalities persecuted and murdered by the Soviet apparatus of repression. The documents gathered by the Memorial significantly broadened our knowledge, among others, about the Gulag, the "Great Famine" in Ukraine and the Katyn Massacre.
The Institute of National Remembrance has been cooperating with the Memorial for many years. Thanks to the materials obtained from the Memorial Society, the IPN has been able to create the Index of the Repressed. As a result, thousands of Poles learned about the fate of their relatives who were repressed or died in the East.
In 2012, the Memorial was honored by the Institute of National Remembrance with the Custodian of National Memory Prize. In the same year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland awarded Memorial with the "Pro Dignitate Humana" distinction for revealing the truth about the Katyn Massacre.
The work of the Memorial lays down the foundation for reconciliation between Russians and other nations which experienced Soviet totalitarianism.
The liquidation of the Memorial may destroy the effects of many years of work and strengthen the narrative of extreme political groups that deny the existence of communist crimes. The measures adopted by the Russian authorities against the Memorial are part of a wide-ranging campaign to combat independent research centers and destroy civil society. We cannot stand idly by - let's protest, let's speak with one voice in defense of the Memorial: the truth cannot be quashed or forgotten. Russian decision-makers ought to remember this.

Заявление президента Института национальной памяти о решении Верховного суда Российской Федерации в отношении общества «Мемориал»

С беспокойством и сожалением я воспринял сегодняшнее решение Верховного суда Российской Федерации о ликвидации общества «Мемориал». Этим решением российское государство подтверждает, что не заинтересовано в диалоге, основанном на исторической правде.
С конца 80-х годов «Мемориал» объединяет вокруг себя организации, заботящиеся о сохранении памяти жертв советского тоталитаризма, и борется за права человека. Создание и функционирование «Мемориала» стало ощутимым доказательством демократизации общественной жизни в Союзе Советских Социалистических Республик, а затем и в Российской Федерации.
Во многом, благодаря деятельности «Мемориала», информация о советской системе репрессий и ее жертвах стала известна гражданам Российской Федерации и всего мира. Активисты общества, инициировав принятие в 1991 году закона о политических репрессиях, восстановили честь и достоинство миллионов русских и представителей других национальностей, которые преследовались и были убиты советским репрессивным аппаратом. Документы, найденные членами общества, расширили наши знания, в частности, о ГУЛАГе, голодоморе в Украине и Катынском расстреле.
Институт национальной памяти на протяжении многих лет сотрудничает с «Мемориалом». Материалы, полученные от общества, позволили создать «Индекс репрессированных». В результате тысячи поляков узнали о судьбе своих близких, которые были репрессированы и погибли на Востоке.
В 2012 г. за свою деятельность общество было удостоено награды Института национальной памяти - «Хранитель национальной памяти». В этом же году Министерство иностранных дел Республики Польша наградило «Мемориал» премией «Pro Dignitate Humana» за раскрытие правды о Катынском расстреле.
Работа «Мемориала» — это реальный шанс на примирение между русскими и другими народами, пережившими советский тоталитаризм.
Ликвидация общества «Мемориал» может погубить результаты многолетней работы и укрепить нарратив крайних политических групп, отрицающих коммунистические преступления. Действия российских властей против «Мемориала» являются частью широкой кампании по борьбе с независимыми исследовательскими центрами и уничтожению гражданского общества. Мы не можем безучастно наблюдать за этим процессом, - мы протестуем и говорим единым голосом в защиту «Мемориала»: правду нельзя убить или забыть. И пусть российские власти помнят об этом.
