17 September 1939: "Day of Totalitarian Unity" of two regimes

The IPN's statement on the establishment in Belarus of a new public holiday on the anniversary of 17 September 1939

On 17 September 1939, Stalin fulfilled his obligations arising from the secret protocol to the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, and the Red Army’s attack on Poland allowed the German Reich to increase the pace of its own conquest of the country. 17 September has been and will remain the symbol of Hitler and Stalin’s criminal collaboration against free nations of Europe, and joint German-Soviet military parade in Brest on the Bug river demonstrated the friendship between the two aggressors. Their cooperation brought the enslavement of millions of citizens of the Republic of Poland, among them ethnic minorities, and later on, the enslavement of people in other countries and regions.

In the occupied territories, the German Reich and the Soviet Union embarked on a policy of repression, crime and genocide. Pronouncing the anniversary of 17 September 1939 the "Day of People's Unity" in Belarus offends the memory of not only Polish but also Belarusian and all other victims of both totalitarian regimes.

As a matter of fact, 17 September 1939 is the "Day of Totalitarian Unity" of the two regimes.
