On the 11th anniversary of the Smoleńsk air disaster, the President of the Institute of National Remembrance Jarosław Szarek Ph.D., Deputy President Mateusz Szpytma Ph.D., and the Head of the IPN’s Cracow Branch Filip Musiał Ph.D.,D.Sc. laid flowers on the sarcophagus of the Presidential Couple - Maria and Lech Kaczyński in the crypt of the Wawel Cathedral in Cracow.
Earlier, representatives of the IPN’s authorities laid flowers on the grave of Janusz Kurtyka in the ‘Alley of the Honour' at the Rakowicki cemetery in Cracow. Janusz Kurtyka, the President of the IPN in the years 2005-2010, died in the crash of the Presidential plane near Smolensk.
The Presidential plane carrying a Polish State delegation on its way to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Katyn Massacre crashed on 10 April 2010 at 8:41 near Smolensk. All of the 96 passengers, among them President Lech Kaczyński with his wife Maria, the last President of the Republic of Poland in Exile Ryszard Kaczorowski, Deputy Speakers of the Seym and Senate, MPs, officers of the Polish Army, employees of the Chancellery of the President, heads of state institutions, clergy, representatives of ministries, veterans, social organizations and the crew, died as a result of the crash.
