Exhibition “The Phenomenon of Solidarity: Pictures from the History of Poland, 1980–1981” – Washington (USA), 29 August – 29 September 2011

On 29 August 2011, the Woodrow Wilson Center Memorial Hallway in Washington an opening ceremony of the exhibition "The Phenomenon of Solidarity: Pictures from the History of Poland, 1980–1981” took place. The exhibit was prepared by the Institute’s Public Education Office. The opening was attended by dozens of people, representatives of both the Polish and American communities. On behalf of the Institute of National Remembrance, Agnieszka Rudzińska, the Deputy President of the Institute opened the exhibition. During the opening there also spoke Carl Gersh, President of the National Endowment for Democracy and Timothy McDonnell, representing the Woodrow Wilson Center. The ceremony was also attended by Robert Kupiecki, the Ambassador of the Polish Republic in the USA.
Jan Olaszek of the Public Education Office gave a short speech on the history of "Solidarity".

The exhibition presentation in Washington was possible owing to the cooperation between the Institute of National Remembrance and the Woodrow Wilson Center. The exhibition was open at Woodrow Wilson Center Memorial Hallway until 29 September 2011 (Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center One Woodrow Wilson Plaza, 1300 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington, DC).

Afterwards, the exhibit will be on display at Columbia University in New York.

The exhibition was prepared to commemorate 30th anniversary of the birth of the Solidarity Movement. It presents the important events from the strikes of August 1980 to the imposition of Martial Law in December 1981. The exhibit also depicts the path which led to the Solidarity Trade Union’s establishment, its relations with the communist regime and the attitude of society towards the Trade Union within the context of the most important political, social and economic events of Poland.
