In the article „Avvoltoi su don Jerzy”, published in Avvenire on 7 February 2007 by the newspaper’s correspondent in Warsaw, there were some statements that need to be adjusted and explained. “A public officer (connected with the IPN) makes an attempt to restart (vainly) the case of the priest Jerzy Popiełuszko, murdered in 1984, with an aim to put once again under discussion the death of the chaplain of Solidarity” – Luigi Geninazzi states. I would like to declare that the prosecutor Andrzej Witkowski has not worked at the IPN since 30 September, 2006 and not been connected with the Institute in any way. On 14 October 2004 Mr. Witkowski was ousted from the investigation concerning the guidance of the murder of the priest Jerzy Popiełuszko. He has not since been entitled to any proceedings with regard to this investigation. The conclusions given by prosecutor Witkowski were finally questioned by the decision of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Toruń, which, on a proposal of a prosecutor of the IPN, stated in March 2006, that “materials accumulated in course of investigation do not justify taking steps with an aim to start a legal procedure in a matter of restarting the case” of 1985. The IPN would only regret prosecutor Witkowski’s actions taken out of knowledge of authorities of the Institute.
Currently the priest Jerzy Popiełuszko’s case is conducted by a group of prosecutors of the IPN in a framework of the investigation comprising criminal actions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the PRL. The IPN is in permanent contact with the postulators of the beatification process of the priest Popiełuszko, who have access to the files connected with the case.
In his article Mr. L. Geninazzi names the IPN as the institution, “that caused a scandal connected with the Wielgus’ case”. I would like to declare that the case of archbishop Wielgus arose after disclosing by media in 2006 the fact of collaboration of the archbishop with the security services of PRL. The files of archbishop Wielgus, that are held in the archives of the IPN, were on 2 January 2007 made available to the Church Historical Comission of the Episcopacy of Poland as the first institution.
Therefore I regret to notice, that the author of the article had not contacted the IPN to verify his information.

Nell'articolo „Avvoltoi su don Jerzy” pubblicato su Avvenire (7 febbraio 2007), del corrispondente da Varsavia del quotidiano, vi sono espressioni che richiedono correzioni e chiarimenti. „Un magistrato riapre (inutilmente) il processo su don Popieluszko, ucciso nel 1984, per ridiscutere la morte del cappellano di Solidarnosc” – scrive Luigi Geninazzi. Desidero informare che il procuratore Andrzej Witkowski dal 30 settembre 2006 non lavora nell'Istituto della Memoria Nazionale e in nessun modo è legato all'Istituto. Il 14 ottobre 2004 è stato allontanato dalla conduzione dell'indagine riguardante i motivi dell'esecuzione dell'omicidio di don Jerzy Popiełuszko. Da quel momento non è più autorizzato a compiere qualsiasi attività legata a questa indagine. Le tesi espresse dal procuratore Witkowski sono state definitivamente confutate da una decisione della Procura Regionale di Toruń, che su richiesta del procuratore dell'Istituto della Memoria Nazionale, a marzo 2006 ha dichiarato che „i materiali raccolti durante l'indagine non motivano l'intraprendere iniziative aventi per scopo l'avvio della procedura circa la riapertura del processo” del 1985. L'Istituto può esprimere unicamente dispiacere a motivo delle attività del procuratore Witkowski, condotte senza consenso delle autorità dell'Istituto della Memoria Nazionale.
Attualmente la faccenda riguardante don Jerzy Popiełuszko è condotta da un gruppo di procuratori dell'Istituto della Memoria Nazionale a Varsavia, nell'ambito delle indagini riguardanti le attività criminali del Ministero degli Interni della Repubblica Popolare Polacca. L'Istituto della Memoria Nazionale è in continuo contatto con i postulatori del processo di beatificazione di don Popiełuszko, che hanno accesso ai documenti legati a questa faccenda.
Nel suo articolo Geninazzi chiama l'Istituto della Memoria Nazionale l'istituzione „che ha lanciato lo scandalo del caso Wielgus”. Informo che la faccenda dell'arcivescovo Wielgus è nata dalla rivelazione, fatta dai mass media, della collaborazione dell'arcivescovo Wielgus con i servizi di sicurezza della Repubblica Popolare Polacca. Il primo ad accedere ai documenti inerenti che si trovano nel patrimonio archivistico dell'Istituto della Memoria Nazionale, in data 2 gennaio del corrente anno, è stata la Commissione Storica Ecclesiastica dell'Episcopato Polacco.
Con rammarico occorre rilevare che l'autore dell'articolo non ha contattato l'Istituto della Memoria Nazionale e non ha verificato le sue informazioni.
