The “Cross of Freedom and Solidarity” distinctions and a historical debate on the role of “Solidarity”, in the process of transformation of Eastern bloc countries; 3 June, Kamienica Theatre

The official celebrations of the 30th anniversary of the free elections to the Senate of the Republic of Poland are taking place on 3-5 June 2019.The event was co-organized by the Institute of National Remembrance and the Parliament of the Republic of Poland. The ceremony was attended by dissidents from Eastern bloc countries and the Speakers of the Parliaments of Central and Eastern Europe.

 

On June 3 at the Kamienica Theater in Warsaw, the President of the Institute of National Remembrance, Dr Jaroslaw Szarek, awarded former activists of the Polish anti-communist opposition with the "Cross of Freedom and Solidarity". A historical debate on the role of “Solidarity”, in the process of transformation of Eastern bloc countries was moderated by Bronisław Wildstein. Panelists from the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Lithuania and Russia took part in the discussion. The celebrations were followed by a concert featuring Paweł Piekarczyk and Leszek Czajkowski.

 

On June 4, as part of the IV Summit of the Speakers of the Parliaments of Central and Eastern European Countries for oppositionists, organized by the Parliament of the Republic of Poland, a discussion on the fall of communism in Central and Eastern Europe and the formation of a common historical memory will take place. Next, the ”1989 – Rok Wolności Ludów – Zwycięstwo Wolnego Słowa” exhibition will be opened in the building of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland.

The program is to be supplemented by a visit to the Museum of Cursed Soldiers and Political Prisoners of the Polish People’s Republic, a walk following the trails of soldiers of the "Radoslaw" Group in the area of ​​Czerniaków, and a Sinfonia Varsovia concert in the Teatr Wielki - National Opera. Representatives of the Speakers of Parliaments will also meet with students of Eastern European Studies at the University of Warsaw.
