Symbolic return to the country of Admiral of the Fleet Józef Unrug, commander of the Battle of Danzig Bay (24-25 September 1939)

The ceremony began on 24 September 2018 in Montrésor (France), where, from 1973, the vice admiral's grave had been located. The next day, from the military port of Brest, a coffin with remains of the late Admiral Józef Unrug and his wife Zofia have been transported aboard a Navy ship to Poland. On 2 October 2018, official funeral ceremonies took place in Hel, Gdynia’s Oksywie and Gdynia.

 


A solemn, state funeral, of late Admiral of the fleet of Józef Unrug and depositing his remains together with the remains of his late wife. Zofia Unrug in the Refuge of Remembrance in Gdynia's Oksywie was a symbolic fulfilment of his will, according to which he wanted to rest in his homeland with his comrades-in-arms.

The organizing committee, under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Poland, supervised the preparation of the ceremony. The committee included the representatives of the late families of the navy officers, as well as the National Security Bureau, the Institute of National Remembrance, the Ministry of National Defense (including the Polish Navy), the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Office for War Veterans and Victims of Oppression and Gdynia City Hall.
