Forty years ago, the opposition to the communist authorities had gotten so strong that they couldn't contain it any longer with their security services and the usual harassment methods. Poland was placed under martial law, civil liberties suspended, resistance brutally crushed and repressions - arrests, internment, layoffs and many others - widespread. Yet, what seemed like communist victory at first, in the long run failed.
