On 10 December 1941 at 5.30 a.m., Cpt. Adam Zieliński, commander of the 1st Company of the 3rd Carpathian Rifle Battalion, planted the white and red flag at the top of the hill Ras el-Medauar. Thus, the siege by the Axis troops of the Tobruk fortress, which was defended by the Polish Independent Carpathian Rifle Brigade for 110 days, ended.
On the 80th anniversary of these events, the Office for Veterans and Victims of Oppression organized celebrations in honor of the heroic defenders of Tobruk. At 10.30 a mass for the fallen and deceased soldiers of the Independent Carpathian Rifle Brigade was celebrated in the Field Department of the Polish Army. At noon, on Marshal Józef Piłsudski Square, a memorial assembly took place, combined with the salute of honor and the ceremony of laying wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Karol Nawrocki, Ph.D. President of the Institute of National Remembrance, took part in the anniversary celebrations.
