Description | From 4 until 27 February 2014 exhibition "Learnt Polnisch" (Learn Polish) will be on display at Janusz Kurtyka IPN Educational Center at Marszałkowska 21/25 in Warsaw. It has been prepared by BStU – Federal Commissioner for the Records of the State Security Service of the Former German Democratic Republic or the Gauck Institute - German equivalent of the IPN. The exhibition presents images from the archives of the Stasi political police,
which feature numerous examples of
graffiti and leaflets with Poland supporting slogans, such as "Learn
Polish", which appeared in East Germany at the turn of 1980 and 1981. The photographs
are accompanied by excerpts from Stasi reports, documenting attitudes of the
GDR citizens towards "Solidarity": respect, admiration and even envy . Although
some of the evidence indicate anti-Polish prejudices, for most residents of East
Germany the "Solidarity" carnival was hugely important – it brought
hope for change, encouraged to political action and added courage. The exhibition
shows various forms of demonstrating solidarity with Polish trade unionists and
the role "Solidarity" has played in overthrowing the Communist
regime. |
