Two tonnes of Polish history will be shipped to its Homeland

The Institute of National Remembrance will secure the files of the Polish Falcons of America

On 25 August 2019, a four-person delegation of the IPN visited the seat of the Polish Falcons of America in Pittsburgh with the aim to implement the provisions of the cooperation agreement concluded by the management boards of both institutions. The agreement stipulates that the Polish Falcons shall hand over all the drafted and collected historical files to the IPN Archive. During their two-week stay in the United States, the representatives of the IPN will secure the files and arrange their transport to Poland. At the IPN, the archivists will register and preserve the documents in accordance with archival methodology standards, and then subject them to the process of digitisation. The digital copies of the files will be provided to the Polish Falcons free of charge.

The Polish Falcons’ Archives have collected important source materials on the Polish community in North America. They include the files of Teofil Starzyński (1878–1952) – Colonel of the Polish Army and long-term President of the Falcons’ Alliance, and Agnieszka Wisła (1887–1980) – independence activist, originator of the recruitment campaign to the Polish Army in France, and paramedic of the Polish White Cross. The collection also includes the documents drafted by the "Falcon" Gymnastic Society from the Lwów region, private photographs of Polish soldiers, alongside with a set of newspapers and magazines which have been issued by the Falcons since the beginning of the 20th century.

The first talks concerning the handing over of files to the IPN were held in March this year when both parties met in Pittsburgh. A joint approach and possible forms of cooperation, as well as framework provisions of the future agreement were worked out at that time.

The collection was handed over as part of the "Archive Full of Remembrance" project implemented by the Institute, aimed at preserving historical documents depicting the history of Poland and Poles in the 20th century.
