President Barbara M.J. Kukulska visits the IPN - 19 September 2018

On 20 September 2018, the Deputy President of the IPN, Prof. Krzysztof Szwagrzyk received Barbara M.J. Kukulska - President of the Polish Association in Johannesburg, editor-in-chief of "Wiadomości Polonijne" published in South Africa, member of the Polish Consultative Council at the Speaker of the Senate of the Republic of Poland and initiator of the Siberian Association in South Africa. The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Director of the National Education Office, Dr. Waldemar Brenda.

Professor Szwagrzyk discussed the work of the Institute of National Remembrance at the Warsaw lot "Ł", where in the Stalinist period the corpses of the murdered or tortured in Stalinist prisons were secretly buried. He stressed that it is the duty of the Polish State to provide each of these - so far unnamed victims - identification and solemn funeral with the participation of their family members.

In turn, President Kukulska mentioned the recent celebrations of the seventieth anniversary of the Association. On this occasion, a documentary directed by Maryla Guza was made, which will be shown in autumn this year by TVP.

Another topic of the meeting was the future cooperation between the Association and the Institute of National Remembrance as part of the promotion of Polish history abroad - addressed both to representatives of the Polish community and to the indigenous people of South Africa - in relation to the centenary of regaining independence. President Kukulska was particularly interested in the possibility of showing the exhibition of the IPN "Fathers of Independence" in several places, as well as acquiring educational materials of the Institute, which could be made available to schools and Polish community institutions.

At the end of the visit, President Kukulska received a memorial gorget from the hands of the Deputy President of the IPN.
