During the visit, the cooperation of the Office of Search and Identification of the Institute of National Remembrance with the Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Georgia was discussed within the search for secret burial places of victims of Soviet repression in Georgia. In March this year the experts of the IPN’s Office of Search and Identification and the Department of Forensic Medicine at the University of Wrocław were conducted combined archaeological, exhumation and identification work in Rustavi. Director of the Archive of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Georgia handed over to Professor Krzysztof Szwagrzyk maps and photographs, found in a comprehensive query conducted in resources of the Archive of the Ministry as well as in Georgian peer institutions. The materials could be helpful in further phases of the project. The continuation of the exploratory work in Georgia is planned for the spring of 2019.
Both sides have stressed the importance of the current cooperation and thanked for its results. Professor Szwagrzyk added that the Institute would make every effort to help the Georgian side locate secret burial places of the victims of Soviet repressions. He assured that the provideddocumentation would be immediately analysed and compared with documents at the IPN disposal.
At the end of the meeting, Omar Tushurashvili presented a film made by the Archive of the Ministry of Internal Affairs describing all cooperation with the IPN with special attention being paid to archival and exploratory projects from the date of signing contracts between the institutions - in the area of archival research in 2013 and in the area of search for secret burial places of victims of Soviet repression in the 20th century in Georgia – in 2018.
