Aviation art of Piotr Górka

Piotr Górka, Aviation art of Piotr Górka, translated by Wojciech Matusiak, Warszawa 2024, 172 pages., ISBN 978-83-8229-696-9

I first came across the art of Piotr Górka in 1992, when he paid me a visit at my apartment. He brought his sketches with him and asked my opinion. The first thing that captivated me was their extraordinary precision and consistency in workmanship, as well as the dynamics of the composition. However, while looking at them, I noticed some minor errors that could not have been avoided without practical flying experience. I carefully looked through all the drawings once again, chose a few and used these as examples to point out the mistakes made by the artist. I did not have to wait long for the result of our conversation. A few weeks later, Piotr reappeared with new, revised versions. It was then that I realised what an extremely difficult task it must be to take up this subject in painting. The artist has to cope with the challenges posed by the landscape, have the ability of good organisation of space, light and colour. In addition, he must maintain certain relations and order so characteristic of aerial fighting, and most importantly, everything must be presented in such a way as to combine into a whole.
